NotesThere’s a lot happening on the seafloor these days: aquaculture, trawling, mining, communication cables. This means that there is a need for accurate, self-powered sensors for benthic environments. In this article, the authors report on a benthic microbial fuel cell and a power management platform that can recharge lithium batteries. The authors conclude that the systems described “are now sufficiently mature to be applied within marine observation networks. They represent an alternative power source that may be integrated readily with many kinds of innovative sensors.” (from the Abstract)
