NotesIn layperson’s terms, epiphytes are plants that grow on other plants. Epiphytes growing on seagrass leaves increase productivity and add food for grazers to the ecosystem. Too many epiphytes, however, shade the host seagrass and interfere with its ability to absorb sunlight. This article reports on a 4-year study of seagrass epiphytes in the lower intertidal of Yaquina Bay, contrasting marine and riverine environments and dry and wet seasons.
