NotesIn the winter of 1942-1943, a block of about 15 acres of land on which 15 houses were located, slumped and slid towards the sea. This happened in the “Jump-Off Joe” area of Newport, a location that has the highest rate of erosion on the Oregon Coast. In 1982, developers built a condominium in the same area. The project was approved by Newport city government, and some geologists claimed that it was safe, although it was next to an active landslide. Environmentalists objected. Nature settled the argument. This article gives a good history of the area and is an excellent cautionary tale. Good map, lots of photographs.
