Notes | Describes the annual spring visit to Yaquina Bay (generally in April) of transient killer whales. “Five Orcas entered Yaquina Bay in early April and were seen killing at least five sea lions before heading back out to sea. The group included one female over 20 feet long and weighing an estimated 20 tons.” While the whales were allowed to linger in the 1980s, this is no longer the case. Today, the Coast Guard escorts the killer whales out of the bay, in order to prevent harassment or a disastrous accident involving excited boaters. |
