Notes | This article gives an update on the status of oyster culture at Yaquina Bay in the early years of the 20th century. Eastern oysters had been planted in the bay in 1896, and they thrived, but failed to propagate in the cooler Pacific waters. So the Yaquina Bay Oyster Company began importing oyster seed in 1904, accepting the added cost of being unable to get the oysters to reproduce. This would be the practice for quite some time to come. Some wondered if Japanese oysters might do better, but at this point, that experiment was not yet tried. |
