NotesThis paper discusses the accidental creation of two clam beds by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Yaquina Bay in 1948 and in Coos Bay around 1950 through dumping of enough dredging spoil to create small islands in the river. The islands were subsequently colonized by clams. The suggestion is to test using dredging spoil to create more clam beds. "Fishery biologists are not in complete agreement on the desirability of such a project. From the viewpoint of shellfish biologists, this is a justifiable procedure. However, biologists working with finfish such as shad and striped bass are convinced that these areas are more valuable as feeding grounds for these species." (p.6) Includes maps showing the locations of the man-made clam beds.
