Notes | In the summer of 1856, Phil Sheridan was stationed at Fort Hoskins in Yamhill County. He led a detachment of troops to Yaquina Bay to deliver cattle to starving Native Americans on the newly formed Siletz Reservation. Passages detail building a road between King's Valley and Siletz, the cattle delivery, and building a block-house for the reservation agent at Yaquina Bay in part of the Native American cemetery. In a memorable passage, Sheridan mentions Native American women and children capturing crab in the bay by torchlight. "... the reflection by the water of the light from the many torches, with the movements of the Indians while at work, formed a weird and diverting picture of which we were never tired." (p.100) |
